If you’ve ever sat on the porch on a starry night and pondered your existence while gazing up at the cosmos, you’re probably the type who’s also tried the magic of shrooms. Psilocybin – otherwise known as “magic mushrooms” – are some of the most potent psychedelic fungi on the planet. Revered and used by many cultures across the globe, psilocybin have been relied on for spiritual, mental, emotional and physiological support for millenia. Today, beneficial fungi like psilocybin are a popular remedy & supplement used by thousands of people for millions of reasons. There are over 10,000 known species of fungi, with as many as 2-3 million more to be further explored and defined. Many of these species of fungi like Chaga, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Lion’s Mane and Psilocybin have become indoctrinated in natural medicine as potent sources for antioxidants, immunity boosts, and brain & body support.
Whether you’ve tripped on psilocybin or not, you’ve probably heard of it as a powerful psychedelic that can send a person on a potentially life-changing inner journey. On the flip side, psilocybin also has some negative stereotypes associated with its consumption, such as the dangers of a “bad trip”. Regardless of your opinion of this misconceived fungus, there is a surge of research & development into its effectiveness for a variety of serious conditions, such as Schizophrenia, PTSD and Depression. Many people are turning to microdoses of substances like cannabis, psilocybin, or LSD for a significant boost to their mood, mental faculties and their ability to cope with everyday life. What is a “microdose” you might ask? Let’s look at the growing trend of microdosing psilocybin and how it can support a healthy mind & body.
What It Is & Why You Should Try It
Essentially, microdosing is the practice of taking very small doses of a substance – in this case psilocybin mushrooms – over time with the aim of achieving the health benefits without experiencing the psychedelic or psychoactive effects. This might seem counterintuitive to some, who enjoy using psychedelics and exploring consciousness, but as we discussed these notions can seem overwhelming to some people. There are a growing number of studies that have shown the positive effects of psilocybin on patients suffering from severe mental trauma (PTSD) and persistent behavioral disorders (Depression, Schizophrenia). So, even if you’re not the type looking to catapult yourself into a journey across the cosmos by tripping on shrooms, you can still benefit from the natural healing properties of this one-of-a-kind fungus.
Microdoses are often one tenth or smaller than a typical dose of magic mushrooms, for example:
- A typical dose of psilocybin intended to induce psychedelic effects is around 3.5 grams or 1/8 oz
- This same psilocybin dosage would be microdosed over X amount of days, depending on factors like your shroom tolerance and weight (i.e. 0.2-0.3 grams per 1-3 days)
- Frequency of microdose depends on your level of need, but typically people consume their microdose of psilocybin once every 1-2 days, or once every 3 days
- Determining what microdose potency & frequency fits your needs can take some experimenting on your part, but just remember to start low and go slow with your microdoses and pay close attention to your reactions
- Try our easy-reference microdose calculator by typing your weight and a suggested dosage will be generated for you. Remember, the frequency of microdosing is just as important as the dosage amount, so be sure to stick to our “How to Microdose” schedule coming up later on in the article.
These are just standard figures and it needs to be said that psychedelics affect people very differently, so it’s important to use any dosage numbers as generalizations and not prescribed amounts. With that being said, what does a microdose do for you if it doesn’t induce psychoactive effects? Let’s talk about neurogenesis.
If you’ve ever listened to podcasts or presentations from Paul Stamets, the “godfather of fungi”, you’ve probably heard all about “Neurogenesis” brought on by consuming mushrooms. Neurogenesis is basically the creation and mapping of new neurological pathways in the brain, more specifically the growth of new neurons in the brain. When you experience neurogenesis, your cognitive functions might improve, you may find yourself with more focus & energy, your demeanor may be more positive and extroverted, and most noticeably your creative juices are flowing. Many test groups have been reviewed and are currently undergoing research for the behavioral, mood, and personality influences of microdosing psilocybin. In most of the previous studies, participants who consumed psilocybin were found to have significantly positive mental, emotional and physiological responses – such as a more pronounced personality, greater mental acuity and a surge in creative thinking & behaviors. These controlled experiments have yielded limited data so far, but the results have been so exciting across many similar studies that a lot more attention is being given to microdosing psychedelics and their potential medical benefits.
It should be apparent by now that the potential benefits of psilocybin far outweigh the stigmatized risks. This isn’t just your Grandpa’s “Woodstock Shrooms” anymore, there’s a vast consumer base of people who rely on psilocybin medically, to normalize their brain function and assist their bodies in living a healthy, everyday life. Putting your personal biases aside is the tough but crucial first step to experiencing this life-changing fungus, and even if you don’t have a perceived need for psilocybin who doesn’t need a little extra mental, emotional and spiritual support?
HOW TO MICRODOSE:
Be Safe, Start Low, Go Slow
Like with any new substance in your daily routine, it’s very important to pace yourself and do your research. Before you get started, you need to understand your reasons for taking psilocybin, the results you’re seeking, what kinds of experiences you’ve had in the past, and being cognizant of the risks associated with consuming psychedelics. Once you’ve taken a good long review of your situation and what your goals are, it’s time to consume some shrooms!
What microdose or schedule should you try? We need to repeat what we said earlier: psychedelics affect people on an individual basis, and what kinds of results you’re looking for will determine how you microdose as much as your personal biology does. Nevertheless, as a guideline for microdosing we recommend starting with a microdose of 0.2 grams (for an average 180 lbs person) once every three days. As usual, taking psilocybin after a bit of food can help your body with digestion, so the morning after breakfast is an ideal period of the day. It’s also imperative that you try to avoid microdosing at night, as consumption of psilocybin has been known to interfere with sleep on occasion. So, to recap:
Day 1: Take your microdose, preferably early in the day
Day 2: No dose (after effects)
Day 3: No dose (normal, resting period)
Day 4: Microdose again, repeating with “No doses” for another two days, and so on.
What kind of psilocybin should you take? First of all, you need to determine what kind of shroom product suits your preferences. Do you love a warm cup of tea? Many people like to make mushroom tea because it’s a calm, comforting way to get their daily dose of psilocybin, and you can steep/brew it to your needs. Another simple but popular way to microdose is to simply eat portions of the mushrooms themselves. This method is the most common, but it can also be the riskiest – for some, eating mushroom caps or stems can cause nausea or stomach cramping. For others, eating raw shrooms can have varying degrees of psychedelic after effects – how much active compounds you’re eating can vary from bite-to-bite, so some people have struggled with snacking on psilocybin as an inaccurate method.
In many professionals’ opinions, capsules containing ground psilocybin or powder is the best way to accurately microdose. This methodology is no different than taking measured doses of vitamin C in lieu of eating an orange – you know how much you’re getting, how quickly it is being absorbed by the body, and generally what kinds of effects you can expect when you consume capsules instead of the natural source itself. Psilocybin capsules also have the advantages of removing the issues of taste, which some people find to be overpowering if not undesirable. Capsules also reduce the instances of nausea/cramping for people with sensitive stomachs, so there’s really no argument when it comes to what kind of psilocybin products are the most effective for microdosing.
What kinds of warning signs should you look out for? Lastly, but certainly not least, you need to understand how psilocybin can affect you and what you need to be careful about. Nobody wants to have a bad trip; be it an accidental psychedelic experience or even if you’re a veritable “psychonaut”. Sometimes you can do everything right and still experience some psychoactive effects, but the important thing to remember is to remain calm and stay in a safe place. If you are just starting out with a microdose, or you’re upping your usual amounts to experience enhanced benefits, remember that phrase: Be Safe, Start Low, Go Slow.
Being SAFE means taking your microdoses in a secure, familiar place and with supportive, trustworthy people around you. Starting LOW is also important because even if you think you understand how psilocybin affects you, any increased dose can significantly change your experiences so be sure to take your time and patiently up your dose, closely monitoring how the new dose makes you feel. Going SLOW cannot be overstated; most psychedelic episodes or issues with psilocybin occur because people are impatient and rush towards the results their seeking.
You may not notice the effects from microdosing psilocybin at first, or some people don’t notice their influence at all. This is completely normal – in fact, some microdosers only notice any changes to their physiological or neurological health when they STOP taking psilocybin. One of the major reasons for microdosing psychedelics is due to the fact that smaller, frequent doses can have profound health impacts without influencing or changing your day-to-day life.
