Essentially, microdosing is the practice of taking very small doses of a substance – in this case psilocybin mushrooms – over time with the aim of achieving the health benefits without experiencing the psychedelic or psychoactive effects.  This might seem counterintuitive to some, who enjoy using psychedelics and exploring consciousness, but as we discussed these notions can seem overwhelming to some people.  There are a growing number of studies that have shown the positive effects of psilocybin on patients suffering from severe mental trauma (PTSD) and persistent behavioral disorders (Depression, Schizophrenia).  So, even if you’re not the type looking to catapult yourself into a journey across the cosmos by tripping on shrooms, you can still benefit from the natural healing properties of this one-of-a-kind fungus.

Microdoses are often one tenth or smaller than a typical dose of magic mushrooms, for example:

  • A typical dose of psilocybin intended to induce psychedelic effects is around 3.5 grams or 1/8 oz
  • This same psilocybin dosage would be microdosed over X amount of days, depending on factors like your shroom tolerance and weight (i.e. 0.2-0.3 grams per 1-3 days)

These are just standard figures and it needs to be said that psychedelics affect people very differently, so it’s important to use any dosage numbers as generalizations and not prescribed amounts.  With that being said, what does a microdose do for you if it doesn’t induce psychoactive effects?  Let’s talk about neurogenesis.

Be Safe, Start Low, Go Slow

Like with any new substance in your daily routine, it’s very important to pace yourself and do your research.  Before you get started, you need to understand your reasons for taking psilocybin, the results you’re seeking, what kinds of experiences you’ve had in the past, and being cognizant of the risks associated with consuming psychedelics.  Once you’ve taken a good long review of your situation and what your goals are, it’s time to consume some shrooms!

What microdose or schedule should you try? We need to repeat what we said earlier: psychedelics affect people on an individual basis, and what kinds of results you’re looking for will determine how you microdose as much as your personal biology does.  Nevertheless, as a guideline for microdosing we recommend starting with a microdose of 0.2 grams (for an average 180 lbs person) once every three days.  As usual, taking psilocybin after a bit of food can help your body with digestion, so the morning after breakfast is an ideal period of the day.  It’s also imperative that you try to avoid microdosing at night, as consumption of psilocybin has been known to interfere with sleep on occasion.  So, to recap:

Day 1: Take your microdose, preferably early in the day

Day 2: No dose (after effects)

Day 3: No dose (normal, resting period)

Day 4: Microdose again, repeating with “No doses” for another two days, and so on.

What kind of psilocybin should you take? First of all, you need to determine what kind of shroom product suits your preferences.  Do you love a warm cup of tea? Many people like to make mushroom tea because it’s a calm, comforting way to get their daily dose of psilocybin, and you can steep/brew it to your needs.  Another simple but popular way to microdose is to simply eat portions of the mushrooms themselves.  This method is the most common, but it can also be the riskiest – for some, eating mushroom caps or stems can cause nausea or stomach cramping.  For others, eating raw shrooms can have varying degrees of psychedelic after effects – how much active compounds you’re eating can vary from bite-to-bite, so some people have struggled with snacking on psilocybin as an inaccurate method.

In many professionals’ opinions, capsules containing ground psilocybin or powder is the best way to accurately microdose.  This methodology is no different than taking measured doses of vitamin C in lieu of eating an orange – you know how much you’re getting, how quickly it is being absorbed by the body, and generally what kinds of effects you can expect when you consume capsules instead of the natural source itself.  Psilocybin capsules also have the advantages of removing the issues of taste, which some people find to be overpowering if not undesirable.  Capsules also reduce the instances of nausea/cramping for people with sensitive stomachs, so there’s really no argument when it comes to what kind of psilocybin products are the most effective for microdosing.

What kinds of warning signs should you look out for? Lastly, but certainly not least, you need to understand how psilocybin can affect you and what you need to be careful about.  Nobody wants to have a bad trip; be it an accidental psychedelic experience or even if you’re a veritable “psychonaut”.  Sometimes you can do everything right and still experience some psychoactive effects, but the important thing to remember is to remain calm and stay in a safe place.  If you are just starting out with a microdose, or you’re upping your usual amounts to experience enhanced benefits, remember that phrase: Be Safe, Start Low, Go Slow.
